Antarctica, the fifth largest of earth’s continents, is the coldest, highest, windiest and driest of all continents. Located as it is, underlying the south pole, is one of the reasons it is among the world’s coldest regions. In fact Antarctica is almost entirely covered by ice, averaging 1.6 km in thickness. As this continent has about 90% of the world’s ice it goes without saying this is where you will find around 70% of the world’s fresh water. No wonder Antarctica is often known as the Great White Continent! The lowest temperature ever recorded anywhere on earth, -89.2°C, was recorded on July 21, 1983, at the Russian owned Vostok Station. Unconfirmed reports suggest that lower recordings have been made since.

It is against this backdrop that tourists come from near and far to experience an unforgettable Antarctica holiday. The landscape is often harsh, yet somehow magical. Where there is so much ice it is obvious that huge icebergs will be plentiful; rugged, yet having a beauty all of their own.

Visitors who take part on an Antarctica holiday will normally get to see such things as historical sites, some of the region’s wildlife, along with some of the active research bases. You will be visiting somewhere virtually untouched by man. No more the hotels, cafes and bars usually associated with modern-day tourism. Organised expeditions are run by companies who are specialists in the field. They take their responsibilities toward environmental issue seriously in order to maintain and protect this pristine wilderness environment.

Being situated where it is, Antarctica is not an easy place to get to, most expeditions taking place by ship. It certainly is not a cheap place to holiday in either, since the cost of transport can be high, just to get to the place you will be boarding the ship. But, for those of you who enjoy adventure, have a good stomach for some likely rough sea crossings, and are desirous of going to where relatively very few other holiday-makers will ever get to see, then an Antarctica holiday could be your perfect destination.
